Help buying a carpet.

Options
I need a carpet for my lounge/diner so it needs to be very durable but comfy too for the lounge area.

I've been given a price of £895 for a "100% polypropylene abingdon stainfree carpet".

Is polypropylene OK as for some reason my Mum says to avoid it. All the wool carpets were loads more expensive.

What do you think? Is this OK for a lounge/diner? Also is the price about right?

last year we paid £500ish fitted for 100% pp carpet in lounge diner approx 26' by 12'. i can't remember the make or weight of the carpet but we did'nt go too long with the pile because i think long pile collapses anyway and looks more worn sooner. so for the extra comfort i got the best underlay i could, cloud 9 11mm from the internet and fitted this myself for about £50 a roll, two rolls did the job. also we specifically wanted pp because its pretty much unstainable without the need for scotch etc, and can be cleaned with bleach.
6m later still looks like new, only one stain had to be tackled, oily footprint, i cleaned it with white spirit and it fell off no probs.
i can't really comment on wool or other types, but i'm pleased with what we bought.
    hope this is useful.

    Thanks very much.

The underlay included in our quote is cloud 9 too. That doesn't sound too bad when I compare it with your total of £600 as mine includes fitting too and it slightly bigger (26.5 x 16 ft approx)

I am wondering if I'm doing the right thing having carpet in a lounge/diner. However, we've just ripped up our laminate flooring as I didn't get on with it at all. Too noisy with the kids thundering in and out with various wheeled toys i.e pushchairs etc:rolleyes:

ALL 100% polypropylene is inherently stain resistant so is probably a good choice! (Don't let anyone sell you "Scotchgard" for it, it WON'T work!)

One drawback is that it's more prone to charging you up with static, if you shuffle yer feet!

I hate that!! My littleun has got a plastic slide and if you put your hand on her to help her down you get a big shock down your fingers:eek:

I'm definitely loving the stain resistant factor though:D

watch out with wool and wool blends about the stain thing.

our 80/20 wool blend carpet cannot be cleaned with some of the usual cleaners as it seems to affect the dye.

I woulds definately consider a good synthetic carpet for areas where food is consumed.

I need a new carpet for the whole house too

the one we have now was supposed to be stain resistant but ...I have had hard times cleaning off lots of stain..

So 100% polypropene seems to be the answer then???

    thanks for the thread...
