Renewing Car Insurance 2026
There are suggestions that premiums should be coming down or at least stabilising this year yet my renewal has just come through with a 30% increase.
I have been on the comparison sites and I am unable to find a policy with comparable cover at all, let alone at a cheaper price, mine has zero excess and quite a few frills and a five star Defaqto rating, and although there are a few quotes that are a few pounds cheaper, it is not worth the saving of say £50 to lose the extra cover and have up to a £500 excess.
There are a few companies where the saving could be £150 but I have no idea who they are and they have no or a 2 star Defaqto rating which I am not inclined to touch.
I have no recent accidents and more NCD than most companies accept and a low risk occupation so no reason there for any premium increase.
So what is happening? Am I unusual, did I have a very low price last year and am catching up?My price last year 2024 was the same within a couple of £ as 2023 and I have been with that insurer since then, when I moved to cut my cost. I did not move in 2024 as I could not find anything cheaper.
I did make a new application on my insurers website and it came up with a premium just slightly more than my quoted renewal, but then it could probably recognise my details and quote accordingly.
Has anyone else noticed a premium increase and been unable to find any savings by looking around?

Premiums are always highly individual and any talk of average premiums will be representative of the whole market for the average person, you will always get individuals who buck the trend.
Doesnt really matter if the average premium has gone down 20% or done up 300% the best price you can find will be the best price you can get and thankfully you are at least considering the best value quote rather than simply the cheapest.
My premiums have often gone against the norm but then I live in central London and dont have an average car, home or job so not massively surprising my insurance isnt average either.
