Car Insurance - doI need to tell insurer about another car owner?

Hello
I have a car insured with Aviva. Someone has recently joined my household and has their own car, and will normally be parked on the public highway near the house. Do I need to tell my insurer? We won’t be driving each other’s car.

I’ve encountered Aviva’s chat thing in trying to get an answer to this, but it doesn’t understand the question and told me ‘as long as your doctor says you’re fit to drive, we’re happy’, which is pretty random!

  • No, I don't believe you have to. I think you'd only have to notify them if they are driving your car so they can add them to your policy.

Thank you. I was only wondering about it because when I went on Compare The Market to compare prices for my renewal, I noticed there was a question on how many cars were at my household, and thought that since they’re asking it must be information required by insurers in general.

It will vary from insurer to insurer. Some may want to know how many cars are in your household generally, others will only be interested in other cars that you actually drive (or at least are insured on). There is no universal list of things that you do or don't have to tell your insuree about, though some things like accident history and convictions are pretty standard.

Your policy documents will have a lost of changes that you need to inform your insurer of - the page that says "please tell us immediately if...". At renewal you just need to read the questions that you are asked carefully and make sure your answers to them are accurate.

    Thank you for your reply.
I did read through the things online, to check everything and make sure I didn’t need to change anything, and there was no mention of how many cars there are, so I have gone ahead and renewed. I’ll double check.

As I said in my original post, I tried to query it via the online chat a couple of times but the bot replied with irrelevant stuff about medical conditions. There isn't a phone number on their site. They really don’t want to employ anyone to talk to their customers.
