Travel insurance cancellation cover

My husband and I are going on a big holiday later this year and have taken out couple insurance with 10k cancellation cover. Is this the total cover as our holiday is costing rather more than this? Would we be better to do individual policies?

The limit on travel insurance is generally per person insured, so if it's the two of you going and both are on the policy it would £10k each so £20k total. Is that still not enough?

Individual policies wouldnt make any difference on the amount covered but may make claims more complex as you cannot declare medical conditions of the other on your own policy whereas on a joint policy you do.

You can buy top up insurance, what in the US would be called an excess policy, it sits on top of your existing policy extending the cover for another £Xk each. Terms can be a bit hard to get your head round as they generally just mirror the underlying policy even though you dont have to share the underlying policy to get a quote. They will however have their own carveouts for things they won't cover even if the underlying policy does cover it. Eg War and Terrorism are commonly excluded

You could also contact your insurer and ask them for a quote to cover the value of the holiday. We did that with an annual policy where one holiday was more than our limit - it didn't cost much to just increase the cancellation limit for that one trip.

  • Thanks for that. Yes, thankfully 20k covers it. We are travelling round Aus and are there for 6 weeks taking in all the major cities so if it was 5k limit each and the trip happened to be cancelled we would lose money.
I think with what’s happened in the world since we booked and took out the insurance I’ve gone into panic mode so thanks for the reassurance!

As has been said, the cover is normally per person. You should read your policy wording, as some policies only cover trips of up to 31 days while others are 45 or 60 days. Also, war is not normally covered on many policies, although that may be less of a concern now that the area of conflict is known and can be avoided. I find reading the policy wording easier if you search a PDF document for the wording or terms you are looking for.

  • Thanks Luci

We have given the exact dates of the holiday to make sure it’s all covered. Because of my husband’s previous health conditions it’s costing us a fortune in insurance but it’s a trip we have said we want to do, we’ve both recently retired, so we’re going for it. Having said that I will print the full documents and give them a read. I’m pretty sure war isn’t covered but I will check the full docs.

With my health conditions, almost all providers wouldn't even quote at any cost. A medical comparison site returned quotes which ranged from £2500 to £12,600. That was for a single trip transatlantic cruise.

After days searching I eventually found one that would cover me, but at a high premium.
