Old MR16 bulb exploding glass.

I took the claw piece out so you can see it. And took a pic with my finger in the hole where the glass should have been.
And this is what it looks like with the claw piece out:

I don't have that type of bulb but are you asking how to remove it?
If so, I think it should just pull out (once that piece you call a claw has been removed). Try sticking a couple of pieces of tape on the inner sides of the bulb, 180 degrees apart then pull slowly, firmly and equally down on each piece of tape.
If the bulb had been intact I would have suggested a goodly blob of bluetak on the lens and pull down.

As above, it's an MR16, they don't rotate into their lampholder they are simply pushed in and pulled out.
Because of this, they usually require a retaining clip to hold them in place and stop them dangling out of the ceiling (that's the black 'claw piece' you are holding and referring to). Given you've taken the retaining clip out, it should usually fall down, but if it's stuck from paint/debris/etc it might need a little 'light' (hehe, get it) persuasion. Either gripping from the sides as above (I'd probably just use my thumbs for purchase) or gripping the middle with a tool (but making 100% sure the power is off). That said, I've never seen that type of retaining clip before, but I found it on the internet:
The ones I've used have always looked like this. Just google mr16 clip for some, they're everywhere.

To conclude, the MR16s have been replaced with LED versions, circuit tested and all working fine. The grip did pull out, with a bit of force, exactly like in @Exodi ’s link.
(It did take 3 months, because I message my favoured electrician to do a multitude of jobs when he had free time, rather than calling an electrician to change a light bulb.) Having got used to the toilet with just one bulb, it now seems overly bright, not sure which rating of bulbs he chose,

Great news.
Assuming the new bulbs are still MR16, it should be easy to change them (as mentioned before, if you remove the retaining clip, they should normally fall and dangle out the ceiling). They usually have the brightness (measured in lumens or 'lm' for short) on the side of the bulb, easy to pick up a less bright bulb and swap them.

Where I used to work we had some uplighters on the wall that had large halogen bulbs in and I always thought you could probably fry an egg on them they were so hot. The bulbs would explode from time to time spraying the room with red hot bits of glass that would burn themselves into the nylon carpet when they landed.

I’d probably spend more on the new bulbs than I’d save on electricity!

You're almost certainly correct, but I'd imagine changing the lightbulb from floodlight to comfortable glow is more of a quality of life choice than a cost saving choice! We're only talking a couple of £.
