If the car is going to be standing around most of the time, get a load of those desiccant bags, either silica gel (it is actually crystals, same stuff as the crystal cat litter)

    Cat litter will be handy….

Unless there's something particularly unique about this car, I'd get rid of it now instead of paying finance to keep it just in case. Put the money into a savings account so that he's got money available to buy another car later if needed. It shouldn't take more than a day or 2 to buy a new car unless he's particularly fussy.

Paying interest and maintenance on a depreciating asset that's not going to be used much is a bad idea.

You can get bentonite cat litter too. I don't recommend bentonite as it is a very fine powder, it gets out of the proper bags and leaves dusty marks, a tub of it loose could be trouble. A tub of silica gel would be ok, easy enough to put the lid on and put it on the floor.

Bentonite does work really well as a desiccant though, and it is cheaper than silica gel.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
