Windows 10 false updates
I have a windows 10 laptop I didn't want to transition to windows 11.
Although it shouldn't do any updates, for a long time its kept telling me that it has updates and to restart.
Now it wont't allow me to shut down without updating.
I don't want to do this as it could lead to leaving the OS in a confused state.
Do I have to choose Sleep every time I finish using the machine?
Have others experienced this, and found that there wasn't a problem with updating?

If you signed up then some updates ARE available.
Just follow the recommendations, you won't break it, my old W10 laptop is still functioning fine with extended but limited support.4 -
Some updates are not always Microsoft updates, some could be from hardware manufactures. Some driver and firmware updates come through the Windows update ecosystem.
If its asking for updates your usually better off just letting it do its thing.

Your OS will be more confused the longer it runs without a restart as various things may stop working.
Just let it do what it wants and worry about the consequences (if any) later.3 -
A controlled update rather than avoidance:
Save work and manually trigger:
Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates → Restart now
Allow time (30–60 minutes) so it isn’t interrupted
Keep the laptop plugged in1 -
Ok, I'll restart after I finish this session.
Do I need to be connected to wiFi for the update to progress?

Yes, the laptop may defer updates and then pull down after the restart and go around again

Unless your PC is connected via cable…

How will Windows become "Confused"?

You want a list?
Just give me a few Microsoft seconds to prepare it... 😉

If you prevent it from updating, it'll probably fall over in time with the dreaded BSOD= restart after updating!
