Walking 2.6 miles to work?

Great when the weather is reasonable and it’s light
Not so great when it’s dark, windy and lashing down

Agree with others on replacing with a cheaper manual bike, whether folding or not. Makes a big difference in either storing it out of the way or not getting stolen. The walk is doable but may get boring or feel its taking a big chunk out of your evening,

Honestly I’ve never walked that far regularly, but 2.6 miles each way sounds pretty solid. One thing for sure though, you’ll probably sweat, even if it’s a relaxed walk, so bringing a change of clothes is definitely a must.

I have to say as someone else mentioned a folding bike sounds like the best option in these circumstances
Either that or find a nearby lockup, maybe someone advertising a bit of space in a garage for a bit of spare cash? I used to have a neighbour who had use of an elderly lady's empty garage, no money changed hands but he mowed her garden and put out her bins etc.

It depends on when you work as well. I used to walk similar and it was fine if it was a nice day, less so on a wet night.
Can you walk when it's nice and get a bus when it's not?I echo the idea of either getting a folding bike you can bag up and keep inside, or a cheap regular bike you can lock up outside without any real fear of it being stolen. You can probably get a servicable bike for under £50 these days, maybe £100 for a folding one.

what about renting space in a cycle hangar? Here in London, councils are happy to install them, though there might be a waiting list. I can’t remember all the reasons OP gave before for not using an ordinary bike but for me that would be a no brainer for under 3 miles.

Wow what a good idea those cycle hangars are, and apparently insurable which would be my main worry sorted. I had to go and have a look to see what they were.
I wonder if OP has any nearby, it seems a good solution if not too far away?
I notice that cyclehoop (I'm sure there are other brands) have a find a location page.

i'd agree with that , 10 minutes / km is reasonable for a steady but solid walk with a purpose assuming you aren;t carrying a load of weight

People are going on about this as if it's something that Indiana Jones would think twice about tackling! It's a relaxing 45 minute stroll or an energising 40 minute stride.
And with a decent waterproof jacket and trousers and shoes it should be fine in any weather; the walking pace will keep your body temperature up and it'll actually feel nice and snug even in the rain.

I completely agree. In the last week I've done 2x 35 min brisk walks as part of my morning commute (divided with a short tube ride as there's a less nice bit) on Monday and Tuesday.
I'm WFH today and for the rest of the week, so I'm off to the gym later which will include an hour on the treadmill walking at a 15% incline (as steep as it goes) at 6-6.5kph.
