Switching Service Error

Looking for some advice please!

I switched banks from TSB to RBS in July 2023 using the Current Account Switching Service.

After the switch, it transpired that there was an outstanding amount due of £85.00.

I was unaware of this as TSB had failed to update my address once I moved, despite my request for them to do so, so any paper correspondence went to my previous address.

I previously complained to TSB but they found no evidence of wrongdoing on their part so I left it.

I've now got a default on my account and its preventing me from getting a joint mortgage with my wife.

My questions are :

How can there have been an outstanding balance if I used the switching service?

Should I complain to the Switching Service (if this is even possible)

How can I get TSB to remove the default?

Any wording for this last part, or any examples of when someones achieved it would be great!

What makes you think you can't switch whilst in debit?

Have you paid the £85. How long after the switch did you move address? Normally a final paper statement is sent immediately after the switch. How and when did you notify them of yiur change of address?

What was the nature of the outstanding £85 (uncleared cheque? pending debit card payment? direct debit?).

One of the reasons why the switch takes seven days is that this should allow any issued debit instructions to clear the switching account.

The receiving bank is responsible for sorting any issues arising from the CASS switch including any recompense or compensation payable under the terms of the CAS Guarantee.

When did you move, when did you notify TSB that you'd moved - before or after the account switch?

Was there no communication by email from TSB regarding this outstanding payment?

No mail forwarding (formal or informal) in place?

Banks are allowed to block switches if you have debt. If this one was an old debt that was defaulted it is possible they would have allowed it to go through, or yes as above, it might have become due during the switch when it was too late e.g. a payment taken like a subscription so TSB paid it and couldn't get it back.

Not sure why paper statements are an issue as things like this are inevitably in the online banking and would likely have been emailed

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Thanks all, i should clarify some things - posted while I was in the middle of an extremely rushed lunch break.

The account has a positive balance (as per the switching requirements)

I moved about 18 months before switching. Previous address was parents so I still had access, however less than a month laterwe had our first child so mail was absolutely not my concern - appreciate this likely won't matter to TSB.

I asked TSB to move my address during covid. Maybe March time of 2022.

Paper statements werent the issue it was more a notice of default or something to say that money was owed to TSB.

Nothing through by email or text and i, as mentioned, deleted the TSB app after the switch.
