You'd be amazed how many people will still buy the 20 pack!

Many years ago I was in charge of the teams that carried out these tasks (rtc and price changes).

I can categorically state that nearly all of them will be accidental and/or laziness! The everyday staff and even management have no material interest in incorrect pricing, they don't even see the margins on the items.

Examples like in the OP occur due to the mark downs being done before the price change. So it can be just made out in the picture that the SEL is dated 18/03/2026. We don't know when the image was captured. So the staff that do the mark downs will likely be in a different team to the ones that change the SELs. On a price change date they are likely doing 100s if not 1000s of changes. They should notify someone in the appropriate team to update the markdowns, but nearly always don't, then you end up with this conflicting, illogical pricing.

In my day the customer would get the SEL price, cheaper than the markdown price when the item is scanned through the till. But is still misleading, and less than satisfactory!

Only one time I knew of a deliberate 'error', a colleague wanted to get rid of some excess loose wine, rather than have someone strip it off the gondola. They didn't fake the price, but they created a fake promotion. It was something like £5.99 normal price and they just made up POS with a non fabricated original cross through of £9.99. He was just a rogue manager, nobody else in the business I came across would have advocated for, or countenanced such dubious behaviour.

Can't remember which comedian it was but they used to do a sketch of a market trader advertising Pineapples for £3 each or 3 for £10. People were trying to point out it was "wrong" by making purchases and showing its cost more than buying 3 separately of cause thats what the joke was, he was getting extra sales from the people who wanted to prove the pricing was wrong rather than only people who wanted to buy pineapples.
