Getting ready to do the Lowell dance on a 5 year old default, what should I prepare for?

No, in your case its clear what the date of default was, so that would be regarded as the "cause of action date".
Its only when the default date has not been recorded for some reason, that the date of the last payment would apply, as sometimes debts don`t default, so you would need to know the date you last paid it etc, in order to use the limitation act.

I see! Well, I'll sit tight and see how much Lowell badger me :)
Thank you!

Update, I've had a fresh default notice from Lowell today, apparently due to issues with the original PayPal default notice.
"Since purchasing your debt, we have been made aware that the default notice previously sent to you did not provide you with enough time to repay the arrears. We’re sorry for this.
To put this right, we’ve attached a new default notice. It shows the amount that’s overdue and gives you 28 days to pay the full and outstanding balance of £1609.34.
What you need to do now
If you can pay the full outstanding balance by 21/04/2026, we’ll remove the default from your credit file."Alongside a slightly more strongly worded letter:
"You must pay us the sum of £1609.34 within 28 days from the date of this letter.
If the action required by this notice is taken before the date shown, the action below will not be taken in respect of the breach.
If you do not take the action required by this notice before the date shown, then the further action set out below may be taken against you.
If you do not pay the sum of £1609.34 by the end of 21/04/2026:
a) the agreement will be terminated without any further notice,
b) the default with the credit reference agencies will remain, and
c) we will become entitled to take legal action against you."Is this a good time to start requesting the CCA? Currently waiting on a SAR response from PayPal in the early stages.

I was recently wondering myself about PayPal credit. My account with them (£2000) defaulted in December 2024 and I haven't heard anything since.
Lowell have purchased four of my nine defaulted accounts, four other accounts have been purchased by other debt purchasing companies (Cabot / Perch etc.)
The PP credit account is the only one without an 'owner'.
I suppose my 16 months without contact is not unheard of…

Definitely not unheard of! I think aside from an email they sent me in 2023 about how their customer service was bad, they've not contacted me whatsoever since 2021.
I've recently sent a SAR, as they terminated my account after sending an invalid default notice which I don't think is correct legally. The whole thing is certainly a grey area and I think my account history sounds pretty messy.
Best of luck with your own Lowell dance :)
