money saving holiday?

i'm just after some ideas for cheap holidays. there will probably be 3 of us (male mid 20s). i know camp sites are cheap but we dont really want to stay in a tent, caravan would be ok.
we live in reading, berkshire.
totally open to ideas, with an emphasis on keeping it cheap but enjoyable.

last time i looked sun holdays were family only, or at least no single sex groups?
we have no specific budget, i am just after ideas of enjoyable holidays that dont cost loads of money. all i can think of is finding a caravan site or house to rent for a week somewhere near the coast.
no particular date in mind, probably avoid school holiday times though so it wont be so busy with families.

oh youth hostels, never stayed in one, what are they like?

do you get any privacy or are you in a room with strangers?

seems like a good way to save money, would definiately consider it.

some are fabulous in a variety of locations. you can choose from dorm, private room, bunker etc and there are plenty of offers about for joining. have stayed in york centre which is excellent- right on the canal. Book them early for lakes or cornwall.
