Cancelled insurance due to SORN

Hi - my son's car insurance on his original car was cancelled by the insurer because it was off road and declared SORN but now he can't get insurance on his new car. Does anyone know how we go about getting this cancellation expunged from his history as it is unfair to penalise him for something he couldn't control, not his fault the car decided to blow it's head gasket

I'm no expert but I don't understand why it was cancelled just because it was SORN - he presumably could still have wanted insurance for fire and theft, even if he wasn't actually driving it.

What reason did the insurer give ?

  • Not sure they really explained why, but he had a black box thing and because it wasn't moving they kept hassling him even though he explained it was being fixed

It seems harsh to cancel the insurance if the car was not moving. You would have thought the insurer would be very happy to insure the car as the risk of being in an accident is decreased when on a driveway. I would question if the black box was charged and the insurer could not monitor it at all times while it was not moving?

Are you sure it's the type of cancellation that needs to de disclosed. Daughter had similar, black box insurance cancelled by provider as car did not move for a few months. Letter of cancellation explicitly said no need to disclose as a cancellation.

I would expect it is not classed as a cancellation type that needs declaring, as it's not due to fraud or misrepresentation etc, i.e. simply because the policy is not required. Check the letter again or email them to ask for clarification. IF they do expect you to declare it then I would write a letter of complaint and then follow the process/timescales as outlined by the FCA (regulator) which gives them 8-weeks to resolve or reject your complaint, before you can then complain to the FOS as it seems extremely unfair given the circumstances.

That is not a declarable event for cancellation by the insurer. It's a change of circumstances where their policy did not cover SORN and it could not be continued.
