Ebay ladder purchase

Hi, hope someone can help.

In May 2025 I purchased an item off Ebay from a business seller, that on the 15/03/2026 I was informed by Ebay that the item was subject to a UK gov safety recall, and not to use them.

The seller and ebay are washing their hands of it, citing "outside 30 days return window", each of them referring me to the other. Ebay even suggesting I contact the sellers supplier in China.

ok, I bought nearly a year ago, but was only informed of Gov safety recall two days ago. In this case am I covered by UK consumer rights to take on the (London based) seller?

Thanks for any help.

I would think so, because the product is officially not of satisfactory quality or not fit for purpose.

Are you a business, or using the ladder for business? That would affect whether or not you could take action under consumer rights law.

If the ladder is subject to a safety recall, what remedy / actions are proposed within the safety recall notice?

While any consumer rights lie with the retailer, there may be a solution offered by the manufacturer.

What actually is the extent of the safety recall?

Its probably a telescopic ladder. These get recalled with regularity.

Loads more of the same if you stick telescopic ladder recall into Google.

If you want a pragmatic opinion, there's not too much actually wrong with them if used sensibly, and take the weight limits with a pinch of salt.

Your rights are with who you bought it from - the seller, not eBay. eBay is just a marketplace.

You absolutely can enforce against the seller, yes.

Do you have the 'particulars of business name' and registered address of the business? If so write a letter to them referencing your proof of purchase and requesting that they remedy the situation as required by English law, or that you will be taking legal steps to recover your purchase costs.

How did you find out about the recall?
