Book travel insurance after surgery?

Hi folks,

I'm booked on a Med cruise in June (lucky me I know!), and just paid for it a couple of weeks ago. However, I was diagnosed with Angina last year, and I'm up for Angioplasty/Stenting in April. I've got some quotes for travel insurance costing £250ish - fair enough I guess though not keen on paying through the nose, so I've done another search with a non medical specific insurer with the same condition but this time specifying that I'd already had the surgery recently, and it comes back £111 or therabouts.

So can anyone think why I shouldn't wait until the surgery is done to buy insurance in this case? I know ASAB is the rule, but can't see why it would be better to pay double now. I suppose in the unlikely possibility that the surgery goes wrong i'd be covered if I couldn't go.

Thanks!

basic advice is to buy insurance as soon as you've booked or as soon as you plan to book. That you've booked knowing you have a medical condition means the insurance company holds all the cards when it comes to it if you need to make a claim.

fyi - our insurance is just under £500 for an annual policy. Sometimes an annual one actually works out cheaper than 2 trip related policies. We've got 2 trips planned for this year and likely book at least one other plus some weekends away perhaps.

If you buy now youre covered for any issues with the surgery, or anything else that prevents you travelling (within policy limits). Waiting may be cheaper, but then you're taking on all that risk yourself...

What happens if your surgery is postponed for any reason?

Good points all, thanks. Yes I should probably do it beforehand, hadn't considered postponed surgery, though I don't think that would stop me going.

Regarding annual policies, I usually just take travel insurance out for cruises tbh because there's a danger of getting stuck with a massive bill if you have to be taken off the ship. Otherwise I stick with Europe for my trips away, so I don't feel I need travel insurance. Maybe if I could afford 2 cruises a year😃

What is your financial commitment right now? How much would you be down if you had a serious accident or illness tomorrow that stops you being fit to travel?

Insurance is ultimately a risk transfer mechanism, some people are willing to run bigger risks than others. Its up to you if saving £140 is worth running the risk you get knocked down tomorrow and so are uninsured for the holiday.
