Sat Nav with hands free. How much will speed camera info be?

Options
I've done lots of searches re Sat Navs and want one with UK maps and bluetooth handsfree plus speed camera info and live traffic updates...but can't find out the following and would be really grateful for some info:

1) is the Garmin Nuvi 310D a good deal at Halfords for £199.99 (previously £269.99)

2) From what I can make out... and there are so many different deals at the moment I'm completely confused... I will need to pay a subscription for speed camera info and possibly live traffic updates as well. Can anyone tell me how much these subscriptions will be please?
3) Are there any other ongoing costs, e.g updating maps and, if so, how much will these be?

I don't want to go for the cheapest Sat Nav only to find it is the most expensive subscriptions and updates!

  • I would like a sat nav for much the same reason, although I have been advised by a computer guy that he feels Garmin are the worst of the big three. Can anyone add anything positive or negative to support this claim?

    Hi Frankie
The reason I was looking at Garmin was I heard a guy from 'Which' magazine being interviewed on the radio just before Christmas and he said a Garmin Streetpilot was their best bargain buy in the lower price range. However, I completely forget the model number! :wall:

According to this guy Garmin are the most reliable and best at maintaining signal, particularly in London where tall building often block things apparently. I'm still hoping some kind person will be along soon (before the offer closes) to answer my questions. Do you reckon I should duplicate post this to the techno board or would that annoy people?

No idea when it comes to the garmin offferings I use tom tom and have been for about 6 years. I only ever make use of the free trials of the tom tom traffic but it does download the info via my mobile data connection, I have a data plan so I am unaware of the cost involved but the downloads only take seconds so the data must be small i beleive it is about 30kb.

It is usually a subscription service to tom tom plus, there are 2 levels, traffic £30 a year and traffic with cameras for £35 per year then you have your data on top.
  • We must have been listening to the same radio programme, because that's what I heard. It's this that prompted me to ask the questions about Garmin. I am totally confused about which way to go, but will do more research into it

just a thought about the built in hands free.
This will mean you HAVE to have your sat nav on so you can use your phone.
A freind of mine has the same set up and says its a pain on short journeys when he doesnt want his satnav..
I have seperate satnav and hands free and find that better..

If you look at this site they do a database, you download it to your sat-nav and it tells you when yo are approaching a camera.
You can pay a yearly subsription, or pay £2 for a month, I update twice a year, so it costs me £4.
This will work on the Garmin system, follow the instructions on the site.
I have this on Tom Tom, it tells you when you are near a camera, what type of camera it is, and the speed you can pass it.
The voices telling you this can be downloaded for free.

The major advantage in this system is that it tells you where the mobile cameras are, which most other systems don't.

I don't condone this as a way of trying to break the law and not get caught, but as a very high mileage driver (90,000 plus miles last year) its just another driver aid.

The Pocket GPS camera database is no longer available monthly. Its now £19 for a year and updates are available twice a month. Seems like good value to me.

Thanks a lot Uktyler and topher. Do you know if the Pocket GPS is as reliable as the stuff you can download direct from Garmin or Tomtom? I don't intend to use the info to break the law but need reminding of speed at regular intervals! Ideally, I'd like a camera that reminds me of speed limits... not just cameras!

I'm finding this so confusing! :o Still not sure of the Garmin I originally posted about is a good deal or not!
