Capital Gain Losses Claim from previous years how to proceed now?

Hello All,

A year ago, and following HRMC rules, i sent them a letter to claim for some losses materialised on the 2020/2021 tax year. As I didnt filled a tax return that year (didnt need to), the option left was to send them a letter with the deatils and calculations for the year. I did all of this, and sent the letter to them in Mar 2025…

…and a week ago, I received a letter back gfrom HRMC, stsating they received the letter, backed with the date they received, and asked me to provied some calculations for the losses claimed. Now, the problem I have is, there is no reference number in the letter nor contact nor anything really. I wonder if anyone has gone through this before, as the only default option I see, is to send a copy of this lette rplus my calculations etc to the address I originally sent the letter to them: https://www.gov.uk/find-hmrc-contacts/capital-gains-tax-enquiries

I could call them too, but based on previous experience, this will be a nightmare, as its tricky to explain over 30 transactions over the phone!

Does anyone has some experience with a simialr case sorted in the past?

Many thanks ina dvance!

I would just write to them and refer to the letter you sent them on … date. You will of course be providing your NINO, and they should have no issue finding your original query.

Many years ago I needed to claim a relief and did so via letter. They wrote back requesting evidence, and I sent it with a two sentence covering letter, thinking nothing of it. There were no issues. A tax calculation and cheque followed a few weeks later.
