Goodmans, customer services...

Hi,

I recently bought a Goodmans basic cd player from Argos. it was meant to replace my old tape player in my corsa R reg (i did not possess the code as it turned out).

It came with some ISO adaptors (we did not know what they were at the time due to the lack of explonation) and a very basic and shallow installation manual. We figured out by ourselves, cos there was nothing written about this, that we needed an aerial adaptor (which added an extra 3 quid). But the wirings did not make any sense: there was 2 plugs coming out of the radio while there was 3 out of the car. At that time, we did not know what the ISo adaptors were for. So i called the Goodmans customer services from work (so I would not have to pay for their 0870 number) and they gave me a number for Fitting service where a bloody rude rough guy answered. The conversation went in those lines:

"- hi, I have bought a goodmans CD player and the wiring do not match on my Corsa. What do I have to do?
- you have to buy an aerial, and then it will fit.
- no i know about the aerial, it is the wiring i am worried about, they do not match. There 3 plugs coming out of the car and 2 out of the radio. I dont get it...
- they do match, if you cannot get your head round it, go to a local shop to get it fitted.
- i do not want to pay to get it fitted, i want to do it myself. I am just asking you to tell me how to get the wiring right. I am telling you the plugs do not match, I am just asking what I should do and not if i have to go to the local fitter and pay an extra 20 quid
- I AM TELLING YOU THAT THE WIRES DO MATCH!
- AND I AM TELLING YOU THEY DONT. Sorry if I made you waste your time and you cannot be bothered to give the proper advice. Goodbye"

I ended the conversation hanging up.

I have sent the warranty cover papers to goodmans and sorted all the paperwork. But what shall I do? we discovered that the loose wired plugs provided were ISO adaptors and they plug properly in the plugs of the radio, but how do we connect the cables? Do we have to cut them one by one and reconnect them using connection boxes? the only thing I can remember about electronics is stuff like dominos.

Is there a way I could complain to Goodmans about the quality of the phonecall and ask for them to fit it for free?

I really cant believe how rude this guy was. if it is Goodmans policy to let you buy stuff and not telling you about how to do it and suggest you go and pay an awful lot of money to get things done, then I would like to denounce them, but about what, on what to whom?

There should be an adaptor available which will plug into your car's wiring at one end, and the stereo at the other. Not sure if this is what you have purchased. You may have to buy it extra. If not, you can fit it but it will involve cutting the wires and reconnecting with connector blocks etc. It is not difficult but if you don't know what you are doing it is best to get someone who does who you could end up blowing fuses or damaging the stereo.
Argos are all very well but of course their staff have no knowledge whatsoever about most of their products. Probably would have been best to buy it from a specialist Car Audio shop or Halfords.
I used to fit them free at Halfords if the customer was nice to me!
  • Write to goodmans with a copy of your receipt, complain state date, time, telephone number and name of guy you spoke to (if they record calls they might be able to find it). Explain the prob and ask for comp.
    Sense is not common.

Goodmans are absolutely useless, there customer service is non existent. i had a prob with my freeview box, which apprnetly is a very very common problems after doing a google search, they claimed they were aware of this and they were realsing a software upgrade next month that was last august and heard nothing from them. i wrote complaining about this and to do this date nothing nearly 9 months after writing (and i sent it recorded!!)

now i wont buy another goodmans product cos they are so useless

Halfords do a range of ISO adapters, you should be able to find one for your Corsa there. It'll probably cost you around a tenner though!
