Debit card chargeback after switch
I made a purchase using a Natwest debit card on 17/02
I switched the Natwest account to First Direct on 23/02
I want to return the purchased item but the retailer is refusing a return and is only offering different discounts , first 20% then 30% then 10% increases right upto 70% and they say I can keep the goods ,the goods are not as described and I want to return for a full refund, they have now stopped replying to me.
I've contacted Natwest and they said " we no longer have access to the live card/account rails for that closed account which means we can't accept a new dispute from here.
Please contact your new bank and ask them to raise a dispute/chargeback under the Visa/Mastercard rules on my behalf"
I've been on to First Direct and they say " Unfortunately you will need to go back to Natwest to dispute, although you have switched to us they should have a process in place for disputing transactions on a closed account"
I've asked both banks to send me a letter detailing why they cannot process my chargeback request
Can anyone tell me which bank should be sorting the chargeback please ?

100% Natwest but if they'll still be willing & able since you've closed the account is another matter.

Sounds like you bought from a foreign based company - Chinese I bet as that is their normal thing to offer discounts.
Problem with chargeback ia the item needs to be returned, or the retailer will just contest it. Which website was it?

Out of interest, where did you buy the goods from? Sounds like a classic Chinese dropship scam...

I agree, that sounds like a classic Far East seller and a social media purchase, which means a chargeback is not going to be easy even if you negotiate the closed bank issue.

My wife was caught by exactly that type of scam a number of years back. Luckily it was by credit not debit card and was able to claim the amount back. All our spending is now done on a cc.

It would have to be via the bank the payment was made via. As it is their card details, which your new bank do not have.
Sounds like you just spoke to front line @ Natwest & not the dispute team, who would deal with this.
Agree with others above. Sounds like a Chinese co. So please give us the website.

Thanks all, yes it was a Chinese site, sounds like it will not be worth the hastle chasing this up.
It wasn't expensive , I'll try and get them to honour the part refund and chalk it up to experience.

AFAIK, for chargeback it's either a full refund or nothing.

I think OP is referring to the usual goodwill gesture commonly offered by these Far east companies to go away.
