Council tax reduction/pension
Hi stupid question time sorry🤦🏾
My council tax (band D) has gone upto £193 a month now😪
I work full time 40k annual salary.
Wifes part time dinner lady brings in £315 every two weeks.
Two young kids 4 & 8
And my mums getting her pension now. She has suggested putting the council tax in her name and applying for tax reduction is that allowed, currently the council is in my name. The mortgage is joint with my brother.

That would be fraud… Council tax is based on who is REALLY living at the premises. Where is your mother living?

Does your mum live with you? If no, then that would be fraud (but its unlikely you'd be able to do it). If yes, then it won't make a difference unless you, your wife and 2 kids move out.
Some people say there are is no such thing as a stupid question. I think you're challenging that 😀 On the grand scale of things, this is one of the most "out there" tax evasion suggestions i've ever seen seriously suggested.

And are you and your wife and kids planning on moving out?

What tax reduction would she be applying for?
Council Tax is based on who lives in the house- you, your wife and your mother. Three adults.
Low income is based on the household income so your income, your wife's income and your mother's pension.

The council asks about you and your wife's wife's income even if you are not named on the council tax bill.
They then make an assessment as to how much you should be contributing

On a joint income of £48K a year and your trying to dodge council tax of £192 per month.
Kids are in school so why cant the wife work longer hours.
Is mum contributing to bills? heating, food etc.
Switching the council tax to your mum whilst still living there will raise questions from the council. Eg Mr Smith isnt paying CT at 29 Acacia Road, but hasnt provided us with a forwarding address. But Mrs Smith OAP is now paying the CT…..🔔🔔🔔

I'm no expert but from what I've looked into for our household I'm not sure it'd work like that anyway. It goes on adults in the household capable of paying, regardless of whose name it's actually in.

As your Mum is not liable she will be unable to claim CTR
She cannot be liable as you own and live in the property
