IT’S finally time.

After months of watching your lawn deteriorate under the harsh winter weather – March signals the return of the mower.

So our friends at Westland Horticulture are not only giving away two lawn care bundles worth over £100 each – they’ve given you some top tips too.

George Pitcher, Lawn Expert, at Westland, told Sun Gardening: “After one of the hottest summers on record in 2025, many lawns were already under stress, then add a long, wet winter on top, and it’s no surprise that many lawns across the country are now in some of their worst condition for years.”

Improve drainage and relieve compaction

“Aeration creates small holes in your soil beneath the lawn, to allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the roots, promoting healthy growth and improved drainage.
“There’s even a specially designed tool for this – a Kent & Stowe Lawn Aerator has four hollow tines to remove plugs of soil and let oxygen and nutrients reach the roots.

Tackle moss and weeds

“Spring is the best time to act against moss before it completely takes over a lawn.

“Consider treating it with a moss killer before you scarify, otherwise you may run the risk of spreading the moss through its spores whilst it is being scarified.

“Moss is also much easier to remove after being treated with a moss killer.

Overseed thin areas with a quality grass seed

“Overseeding encourages a dense, resilient sward that naturally crowds out weeds and resists moss. Make sure to choose deep-rooting grass varieties, which help maintain soil structure and cope better with both drought and waterlogging, such as Westland’s brand new PureGreen lawn seed.

“It has been bred specially to thrive in UK climates – it grows quickly in spring, its deep rooted and drought-tolerant to stay green and dense through summer, it has an ultra-fine leaf blade for a close-knit lawn that naturally crowds out weeds in autumn, as well as withstanding cold winters to prevent bare patches where moss could take hold.

Feed little and often

“Replace lost nutrients with a quality lawn feed. Slow-release, naturally balanced feeds are ideal, such as Westland SafeLawn, as they reduce the risk of nutrients being washed away during heavy rain while encouraging strong, robust growth.

“Westland SafeLawn is made using natural ingredients, so it is safe for use if you have children or pets at home, and helps strengthen your grass so it outcompetes moss and weeds too.

The Prize includes...

  • Westland PureGreen Lawn Seed 50m – £29.99
  • Westland SafeLawn Liquid Feed – £9.99
  • Westland Lawn Seeding Soil – £16.99
  • Lawn Aerator – £36.99
  • Scarifying rake £39.99

“Regular feeding also ensures strong roots, which helps your
lawn to be more drought tolerant.
