EV tariff availability

Timing is everything they say. I recently got a new job which comes with an ev company car. I got a smart meter fitted a month ago and charger last week but on trying to add ev on my then provider, edf was told they were removed from sale. So I looked at the market and liked Scottish Power because they offer an ev specific rate rather than the overnight reduction with crazy day rate (we wfh so high day use).

Switch went through yesterday, I come to add ev and find they have now also removed ev tariffs.


is there anyone still offering ev tariffs, ideally a company you can sign up to from the start so i don't get in an infinite loop of switch and find its a no go.

    Octopus have a 6 month fix with a £25 exit fee. It's 8p overnight, and a higher day rate that SVT, so maybe not what you're looking for.

    How often do you charge the car?

    If you are with EDF, can you make Sunday Saver work to your advantage?

    Obviously with the Gulf war and the price increase in oil/gas there is going to be far more of this in the coming months. Price increases haven't got to most people yet and the removal of tariffs is just the start. I think it's going to get far worse before it gets better.

    I'd do some napkin maths to work out how important the day unit rate actually is because I suspect it will be significantly outweighed by the EV consumption.

    What is your current annual kWh electricity usage? As can be expected, most of my non-EV electricity usage happens during the day (~80%), yours may even skew higher than this as you WFH.

    How many miles do you expect to do?

    You can then start to bring the Maths together. I get around 3 miles per kWh for my car, and I average about 24 miles per day, so for me I use about ~6kWh peak and ~9kWh off-peak (about ~1kWh of which is the house, and ~8kWh is the car) per day.

    The EON Next Drive Fixed v17 is being quoted as: Electricity day rate: 32.92p, Night rate 9.5p, standing charge 60p.

    So each day would cost me on average around (0.3292*6)+(0.095*9)+0.60 = £3.43

    The cheapest non-EV tariff, the EON Next Pledge Tracker is being quoted as: Electricity rate: 23.37p, standing charge 54.45p.

    So each day would cost me on average around (0.2337*15)+0.5445 = £4.05

    (for me it's even more of a no-brainer as I'm on an older fix with better rates)

    To be honest, you probably don't even need to do this - I think EV tariffs virtually always work out much cheaper for people, unless it's a retired couple with a Renault Zoe who only drive it once a week to town to do a shop.

    I believe EON Next is still offering EV tariffs as that v17 is very new (updated this week). Though unforutnately it's slightly worse than the last, as has been the theme for a while, off-peak hours are now 00:00 - 06:00 (you used to get 6.5 hours before, and before that you used to get 7)!

    I've just switched to Octopus from EoN Next Drive… Very bad timing with all that has happened.

    I have a spreadsheet for our EV use at various kWh/100miles rates plus estimate peak and off peak house use…

    Chuck in the known tariffs and I can see if it's worth a Time of Use (TOU) tariff vs a single fixed rate…

    Do something similar for your best estimates of electric use.

    We used 2218kWh last year charging the EV (inc away from home, at home used 1800kWh)… and a total of 3300kWh peak, 2422kWh off peak electric at home… I'm on a 1 year single rate fix and I calculate that IOG will cost me more than the current one for my use of the EV. Not by a lot but April will see a unit rate drop that may increase the difference, for now.

    Retired so also home all day and we have aircon in summer, also using for heat to conserve the Kerosene (always do in shoulder months anyway).

    I'm with Ovo and a good fix from last year with their ev bolt on. I think they're stillnoffering it according to the website. I'm sticking as I still get their old 7p per kWh tariff, but for new users I think its now higher than that.

    Its worth exploring though, as there's no set hours for charging and it just bolts on to whatever standard tariff you pick.

    For a bit of a guide for OP. On Octopus Intelligent Go

    Ave house daily use is under 10kWh a day when not charging car (we have 2) in daytime. Bonus with IOG is that you do get daytime charging. No issues pre 11:00 at all, @ 7p kWh for whole house, which brings the average kWh charge down. Only ever do 20 to 40% charge in morning depending on car being charged.

    Approx 150kWh were daytime charging of cars.

    That may change as forcing IOG to provide day time slots by plugging in in the hours before 11:00am is one of the things Octopus are trying to avoid with the changes.

    It is supposed to be an overnight tariff…

    If your read the T/C, which are really not changes, just more of a enforcement of the T/C & the emails they have sent out about the changes it is overnight & a possible 6 hours in the daytime, before you would get charged full rate for home use.

    The fundamental benefits of Intelligent Octopus Go remain the same:

    All correct, but that is based on plugging-in the day before so they get to decide when to charge, and yes, sometimes that will be in the morning, but they are supposed to get the option on when that will be.

    If you are only plugging in at say 7:00 then you are forcing IOG to charge between then and 11:00, that is a problem that they are looking at as it is not the way the tariff is designed to work.

    If you plug-in the night before an IOG decided that 07:00 - 11:00 is the best time to charge then that is fine…
