Switching Supplier

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice please. My current energy deal expires on 1st July 2026, I'm with Eon. I know I can swich suppliers 49 days prior to the 1st July without incurring the early exit fee's, but can I agree to switch providers before the 49 days and still be fee free?

For example, in my case the 49 days starts around 13th or 14th May, if the 1st July is one of the 49 days. If I agree on 5th May to move to a new supplier but that the move does not take affect until say 20th May, given that the actual move takes place within the 49 days, but I agreed to switch more than 49 days before the deal ends, would I be penalty free?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for your help.

Switches these days are usually extremely quick - you'd be wise leaving it to the very last minute ahead of the 49 days to be safe, I'd suggest. Chances of your switch taking a fortnight are very low indeed.

  • Thanks for the reply. I seem to remember when I switch to EON last year, I was well within the 49 days, but could stipulate the actual date that I wanted to swich to take place, so any early exit fee's did not apply.

The risk is IMO if you state the date, but then it happens earlier - I suspect you might have a lot of hassle trying to get the early exit fees waived!

When I switched to Octopus at the end of last year, it took 31 hours.

How did you get on with the switch? Did your existing supplier try to keep you, I know Broadband companies will offer incentives to stay so unsure if the eletricity companies can do the same, let us know how you get on?

Unlike broadband, energy suppliers are obliged by Ofgem to offer customers their best available tariff when they come to the end of a fix. There's no scope for haggling (although you're allowed to look at what other tariffs are on offer, if you don't like the "best" one).

EDF, Scottish Power, British Gas regularly offer either/both "stay" or "switch back" offers.
