Good point. I agree that such traits have been here for centuries but with modern technologies it is a lot easier to buy get rich quick stocks at the click of an app. Although technology does have it's benefits in allowing people to research more easier now.

The desire to get rich quick will never go away, especially in this day and age.

When I was younger I dabbled in single stocks, didn’t go well, I learnt.

Personally now, I regularly invest in an all world fund, automate my contributions and leave it, it will go down it will go up.

I’m in my early 40s I won’t touch or sell anything for a decade at the least, it should be fine. If an all world fund over 10+ years bombs then we have bigger issues to worry about

Actually, I am an oil speculator in a fashion.

We use heating oil so a couple of times per year I have to decide when to top up the tank. Traditionally Spring and Autumn are the best choices (prices are typically cheapest in the summer but we can't get through the winter if we fill up then). Sometimes I get it right, sometimes less so. This year I filled up a little earlier than normal because we used more oil over winter, which was very lucky because the Iran thing caused the heating oil price to double in a week. Filling up a week later would have cost an extra £500!

I hear that on the heating oil. Wife likes to keep it topped up so got a delivery a week before the chaos, I also have a solar diverter for the hot water so if we get any sun, its now cheaper to heat with solar than oil (first time in a while).

    Back on topic..

I think there is also another group of potential investors that are scared to see their initial lump sum drop below that figure so stick with cash saving as they see the 'fast cars' style advertising and it makes them less likely to invest as I feel many think its only individual stocks and shares you invest in. Portfolio is an alien term for many.
