Paypal Credit

B and Q would not accept payment from my Paypal account using the credit account. I had to select their Paypal credit option at checkout for the payment to be accepted. Why do B and Q need to know what Paypal method I am using? I have not had this experience with other sellers.

They presumably receive some commission from PayPal for people who sign up to Credit via them and so to encourage people to do so they choose not to accept PayPal Credit that isnt earning them commission.

It's similar to the fact that HMRC won't accept payment via a personal credit card but will accept payments from business/corporate credit cards. Its against the law to charge fees on personal credit cards but not on non-personal cards and hence HMRC won't absorb the loss on personal cards so refuses to accept them but happily accept non-personal because they add a fee (though the scale of the fee seems much higher than what they should be paying given their size)

I see what you mean about the commission but B and Q would only know that it was a payment from Paypal. I did contact B and Q to complain but didn't get anywhere; however, ….. I made the order a few days later with a 15% membership discount using Paypal credit and it went through ok. Either it was some sort of condition of using the discount vouchers or it was an error on their part and it has been corrected.

Interesting point about HMRC - so the little fish will have to find the money as a lump sum.
