car insurance and claiming

Hello, Just after some advice on what to do? I had a small bump in the car, my damage was my wheel arch dent and scratched, the other car scratched passenger side door. ironic a passerby shouted not worth claiming.

The other car was what i believe to over react, when i got out the car said im informing the police, you were going to fast, my back hurts. i just stood there. We exchanged details and then they left first.

Ive informed my insurance.

If i dont make a claim and they do, what happens. If we both claim does it make a difference? How do i know if they have made a claim?

I dont think there is CCTV in the area so what happens if its my word against theirs?

You dont opine on who you think was at fault?

When you reported it to your insurers did they give an opinion on liability?

Assuming you are found to be at least partially to blame the only difference between only them claiming and both of you claiming is your excess, you dont pay the excess for a third party claim only if you claim for your own vehicle. In the case of a split liability situation then you can recover a percentage of your excess proportional to the percentage blame attributed to the other party (ie if its 50/50 then you get 50% of your excess back)

Most insurers dont consider split and fully at fault differently nor consider claim value when considering the impact on your future premiums.
