Cancellation insurance for under 18 on school expedition.

Hi, my daughter is signed up for a World Challenge expedition to Eswatini (Swaziland). WC provide provide health and evacuation cover but advise we arrange our own cancellation and belongings insurance. My daughter is currently 16 and will be 17 at time of travel. Need cancellation cover for about £4k. I’m not overly fussed about belongings cover … she’ll be travelling light and without her own tech.

Does anyone have experience/ recommendations?

What would it cost for her to take out a standard single-trip travel insurance policy?

Is the expedition within the constraints of generally available travel policies?

It might be that a standard policy and some potential overlap with the cover provided by WC works out cheaper than trying to obtain a bespoke policy to cover only elements of the whole.

When WC stated they "provide health and evacuation cover" do they do so via an insurance policy or do they simply think they have the capacity and capability to meet any needs arising from their own local resources and contacts?

  • hi, I’ve checked a couple of providers for standard travel, thinking it’ll do for cancellation, but can’t proceed because she’s <18.
WC have a policy for their bit.

Have you checked with other parents as to what they are doing?

  • thanks. I’ve taken out family multi-trip and confirmed she is covered for trips not with us, but still with a responsible adult.

With many you can declare a different policyholder and insured. They will want a contract with an adult given the complexity of contracts entered into with a minor but will be happy to be insuring a minor.
