As the tenancy was for you and your husband they cannot hold him to account. Did you both sign?

I'd make sure the old flat is emptied, clean, with evidence, and then return the keys to the letting agent notifying them that you have moved out and that you're no longer paying after (notice period - 1 month?). I wouldn't bother giving them your new address but you could leave a mobile phone number or email I suppose.
If the landlord does try to take you to court for the lost rent, they'd need to prove they'd mitigated their costs by renting it out again, and you wouldn't be paying any more than you would if you were to wait out the rest of the term. You can always agree some kind of payment plan.0
