Travel Insurance - Cancellation only without the medical treatment!

We're booking a holiday on the Isle of Wight, and we live in Birmingham.

The quotes I am getting are disproportionate to the amount we are spending - all we need is cancellation insurance for a ferry crossing and our accomodation, but all the quotes I can get include insurance for medical and repatriation costs which, since I am 75 and my wife is 76 do seem to wack up the premiums somewhat.

This is a bit daft!

Anyone know of an independent company that does cheap cancellation insurance without all the premiums for medical treatment, repatriation, and even baggage which is covered by my house insurance? (Part of our hol is via booking.com and we have cheap cancellation insurance through them)

Have you booked the ferry? If it's just cancellation cover for the ferry I think the ferry companies to the Isle of Wight offer that. As regards the accommodation, enquire with whoever you booked with or accept the risk yourselves.

I remember buying a very cheap policy via Compare the Market, just to take advantage of their perks. I had read about it on MSE. It was less than £5 and I can't remember being asking about medical conditions, as it was a very long time ago.

I've just done a dummy booking with one insurance company for UK only. It also asked for details of medical conditions. Understandably, medical cover is not needed in the UK, as we have the NHS. However, I'm wondering if the reason they're asking is to assess whether you're likely to cancel due to a medical condition.

Before you buy insurance via the ferry or accommodation suppliers, make sure you read exactly what is covered. I've seen policies for holiday parks that were so limited in what they covered, that they were hardly worth the paper they were written on.

Are the quotes you're getting via a comparison site?

You will have cover for cancelling due to illness or cutting the holiday short because of illness.

You could have cover to repatriate you to a hospitan near your home , instead of being stuck one miles away in your holiday destination.

Your medical history will be used to calculate your risk profile.

There is insufficient demand for it so the product, to the best of my knowledge, doesnt exist.

An underwriter at Lloyds will naturally be willing to create something bespoke for you but most have a minimum premium in the high 4 figures or low 5 figures so won't be cheaper than what you are seeing already. Thats the difference between a mass market consumer policy priced by a machine, mail merged by a machine etc -v- something bespoke all having to be done by hand by highly qualified people.

Do you want cancellation for medical reasons or not? If you do then you need medical cover. If you are buying a UK only policy then thats pretty much the only medical cover there is.

Also compare the cost of an annual policy, they can be cheaper than a single trip. Also consider a bank account with the likes of Nationwide that include travel cover in their fee.

Annual travel insurance usually includes cover for UK holidays, as long has you have at least 2 nights pre-booked accommodation. You could look for a cheap policy for Europe, but need to read the policy wording to ensure it provides the cover you're looking for.
