I second the Timeguard. Very cost effective and reliable, we've had ours since just after we moved in over 11 years ago. No app, just a simple timer to turn on the immersion for long enough to heat the tank during off-peak.

We looked at a diverter for the excess electric when we had our solar and batteries installed. I recall we were quoted several hundreds to fit this. We decided against it. And as for wasting electricity, you'll get 15p currently, soon to be 12p kWh exporting, so it makes more sense to export at a higher rate and buy in at the cheaper, whether that be electric or gas.

If you are being paid 'properly' for export, then that makes sense - sell sell sell!

I'm lucky to be on the max FIT, so the 'export' quotient is minimal on top. I have a combi boiler, so no hot water store, but I picked up a 2nd-hand Solar iBoost+ for not much, and use it to charge up a 2.4kW storage heater in our front room.

This works AMAZINGLY well in Summer… 🙄

You can retain your ~70p FIT generation payments and still switch your export tariff to someting paying more than the 5p/kWh you're currently on.
