Back billing of inaccurate bill
Hello, i've got into a right pickle with my electricity supplier. It's quite a mess and i'll try and keep it simple.
BG took over the supplier I was with on a by choice pre-pay smart meter. I was billed quarterly for usage and submitted meter readings. Out of the blue my meter readings were being rejected as too high on their app. Raised this with them and no outcome. Then i stop getting bills, i still attempt to submit meter readings but they are rejected. So I ignore the problem as it's not mine to fix.
Fast forward 2 years and I get my meter moved with building works and i must've appeared back on their system and got a bill backdated 2 years for £2.5k.
I'm aware of back billing limits. So will play that card soon. But i've raised a complaint with them as the meter readings i've taken don't align with those in my bill. They are significantly out by ~10,000kwh. The supplier is now saying either pay this one or we'll use your values and the bill will be more.
I'm minded to pay the 12 month of bill as it's less than my calculations for use. But out of principle I would like them to qualify how they have come by the numbers in the bill as the numbers at the meter are so different. Their engineer even took "final" meter readings that they have mixed up and are now getting a bit forceful.
My next move is to get them to state they won't chase me up for their errors in the future then i'll settle. But is their a chance they'll just wipe the bill as they cant prove the numbers.
Many thanks

On the face of the info you've provided, this does sound like a situation where the back billing rules will work to your favour.
You say you were originally on prepayment. Did BG ever explain why they switched you over to a credit account?
