Lease extensions - marriage value abolishment

When will Marriage value be abolished when renewing a lease and what is likely to be put in place instead ?

At this stage, nobody knows the definitive answers to those questions.

The government want to abolish marriage values, but some freeholders have said they will challenge the government in court if they try to do that. That could take years to resolve.

Some people are also suggesting that the reforms will make some lease extensions more expensive.

Some people are suggesting the following:

• With leases over 80 years - extend them now, as they might get more expensive
• With leases less than 80 years - wait and hope that marriage value gets abolished

But one problem is that leases with less than 80 years currently get more expensive to extend for every year you wait. So by waiting, you might end up paying more for your lease extension (unless / until marriage values are abolished).
