Man + Van

The van is widely used for "last-mile" delivery, express courier services, and multidrop, with daily earnings in the UK frequently ranging from £95 to over £200 per day.

The above is from AI, best type of work for van(Vivaro/Traffic) owner, I wouldn't call myself semi retired, but I don't want a 50 hours per week job, I want something flexible?

I will be 64 this year and I want to earn around £10k

Maybe instead of using AI which is not necessarily accurate you could just do a search for flexible driving jobs?

There are a lot of 'man and van' services advertising around my way. Presume you have the right insurance? Also, if you want to pick up a fair amount of work, get a Waste Carriers Licence so you can do tip runs, legally. No idea what hoops you will have to jump through, and not everyone will bother, but those who don't are often fly-tipping rather than properly disposing of waste.

I like the idea of dealing in waste, I do use social media and that is a good place to advertise and promote.

This is for after I quit my job and change my life.

The scheme involves extra background checks using police and local authority intelligence, but it's free and they give you stickers for your van, sounds like a no-brainer.

Just looking at a local trade waste site, Sensa Waste Solutions; how do they work, they weigh your waste and charge you by the KG?

It may not be as simple as charging you by the kg. You won't be able to use the household tip, but you may be expected to know how to handle different kinds of waste, and for example what to do if you encounter hazardous waste, eg asbestos.

Not sure which scheme you have in mind, but in general terms you have to register and pay: https://www.gov.uk/register-renew-waste-carrier-broker-dealer-england

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

A friend runs a waste business, most his revenue comes from repeat work from small businesses. Hours are generally unsociable as many want their waste dealt with outside of business hours. We're in London so the timing for the Congestion Zone etc is also a consideration.

Different sites work in different ways. It certainly can be a flat per KG basis for mixed waste but at times it can be worth sorting the waste as rates are different if you are dumping say food waste -v- say a load of copper. I know he will vary which site he goes to based on what's in the load.

He got orange lights fitted to his main truck which opened up some additional jobs that required them.

Work is dirty, smelly, lots of rats, unsocial hours and for a small number of customers he works 7 days a week when he doesnt have an employee. He seems to make reasonable money, a lot is cash in hand and some of it probably doesnt get declared.

He does one off jobs too but isnt as keen on them as more problems of turning up and the customer isnt there. Volumes being very different to what they'd said. It's not uncommon to do the job first and then be paid after based on the actual weight of waste when you arent talking about something like 1 sofa and non-payment more of a problem.

You need to be physically fit, most customers arent going to help you carry stuff so you need to be able to get a king size mattress or 3 seater sofa down the stairs and into your vehicle on your own or with your staff.

What scheme are you referring to?

You have said that you "like the idea of dealing in waste" so what experience, knowledge, training, research do you have in that sector?

The penalties for even simply carrying waste materials without the Waste Carriers Licence vary from fixed penalty notices right through to unlimited fines and imprisonment. The penalties are even harsher if you are suspected of fly tipping the waste illegally.

What accreditations do the sites have that take your waste for a per kg fee plus a sticker? You will be responsible for ensuring that the receivers of your waste have the proper accreditations.

Without the necessary licences and ability to provide full cycle traceability (waste transfer notes) you will struggle to get any commercial (or even informed private) contracts. That will leave you with the bottom feeders so your rates will be lowest possible. Plus, sorted waste is usually higher value / cheaper to dispose of than mixed waste.

What are your processes if you encounter any hazardous material? Asbestos, refrigerant, chemicals, oil and such like. Are you trained and experienced to identify such materials and handle them safely?

AI Overview - Leeds City Council operates the voluntary Leeds Accredited Waste Carrier Scheme (LAWCS) to help residents find vetted, legal waste disposal services and combat fly-tipping. Carriers can sign up for free by emailing their details to lawcs@Leeds
.gov.uk. For legal operation, carriers must also register with the Environment Agency.
