it's a good basic machine, suspect it may be "on motherboard" graphics card but fine for their use as they won't be playing games

room for upgrades if need be

you do know you could get a better specced (except disk size) dell 17" laptop and ell cheapo printer for less, it woulnt have all the software crud but very few people touch that stuff anyway
  • it is onboard graphics but the 6150 chip is actually v good.
  • ok bought this pc,set it up.........now cant get it onto the internet!?
I presumed it had an imternal modem and was going to let my dad try dial up before he goes to the expense of broadband, but it appears it cant find a modem.
Am i doing something wrong? I plugged it into the phone line and to the eathernet plug in back of pc but its not happening!?
Should i tell them to just buy broadband and get the router ect sent out or is there an alternative?
Thanks again for all the advice.Laura.

it has no dial up modem on it, the ethernet plug you are using is for connection to a network or for plugging into the broadband modem

From your sentence, it looks like you're plugging the phone line into the Ethernet socket. This won't work as Ethernet is used to connect computers to a network of some sort and is only good for connecting to a router.

Does it list a 56k modem as part of the specification? If not, then you can always buy a cheapie off eBay or something to either connect via USB/serial or if you're feeling technically minded you can whip off the cover and stick in a PCI jobbie.
  • thanks guys,yes thats what i was doing,doh!
I will tell them to just go for the broadband i think instead of buying the modem then deciding 2months down the line to get broadband.
    Many thanks foe the help,Laura
