DSP Van Insurance
Hi,
I am working for a DSP for Amazon and we pay a hire to the company we work for the vehicles which has insurance. They also sometimes rent vehicles from a rental company when they are short. I had one of the rental vehicles whcih was supplied to me by the DSP the other day and I clipped a wall and it has put a dent in the van. What am I liable for? My thoughts are the excess between the rental companies insurance and the company I work for's insurance? As a DSP driver we are technically self employed.

What does your contract say about damage to rental vehicles?

It will be in your contract, somewhere.
Personally I'd not sign up to one of those self employed things without knowing the likely excess on insurance, if something happens. You're on the road all day, something is bound to happen sooner or later. And you're taking on the risk yourself, being self employed.

Who rented the van from who?
If you rented it from your employer, then your contract would apply. If you rented it from the rental company direct then that contract would apply.0 -
So in Short they normally use their own vans and rent them to us on a daily basis however they have been using an external company when they are repairing theirs so they have used "Northgate"

Northgate rent the van to Amazon
Amazon rent the van to you.
Your contract is with Amazon - the same T&Cs apply as if it were a grey Amazon-liveried van. TBH I thought it was a condition of the contract that you DID damage it, having seen many of them.

Agree with the likely contractual relationship but the OP still needs to read their own contract. It might state they have a fixed fee to pay or it may be variable so that because it's a hire it may be larger.
Given the number of vehicles Amazon has its unlikely they claim on insurance for this sort of thing, its just not cost effective to pay your insurers for ground up cover when you know you will have millions in claims to pay every single year. It could be that hire van is covered by Amazon rather than the hire company's insurance too.

There is of course the fact that the OP has had an accident and needs to declare such to his own insurer.

I sometime think if I was given one of a van and asked to destroy it to the extent amazon drivers do I'd struggle to match their abilities
