Travel Insurance - 18 Year old Daughter Ill

Afternoon Folks.

Me and the Other half have booked a holiday to Prague for Friday. We purchased travel Insurance last week. But as of this morning, we believe our Daughter 18 year old, With disabilities, has food poisoning. If we cancel the holiday, would the travel insurance cover us?

Our Daughter was not on the planned trip, as we have someone to care for her for the few days. But just wondering on Family emergencies etc?

Will she be ok by Friday, Most porbably, but want to be prepared for all eventualities

Check your policy document and see what it says about cancelling due to illness of near relative.

Ask your insurer, not us random forum members.

My opinion is that only serious conditions that require hospitalisation would likely be covered.

Whilst understanding that you may not wish to leave her, if it’s not an emergency and she has someone to look after her, I wouldn’t be holding your breath about being covered.

Its very hard to read your policy book from here!

By other half do you mean spouse? "Common law" spouse? Someone you have a long term relationship with but dont live together?

Did you buy one policy that covers the pair of you or a policy each?

You say "our daughter" so she is presumably the daughter of both of you not a kid from a prior relationship.

You need to check the terms on medical emergencies for non-travelling close family members. The one thing you will certainly need is a doctors consultation which may be hard for food poisoning. Also if they are ill today are they going to be ill on Friday? The doctor will also be asked if it's possibly connected to their existing health conditions so if they have any GI issues as part of their condition then that can be a problem.

    Cheers folks.

Was actually waiting on the email from Insurance, noticed it in spam looking for the policy wording.

    What is covered
    Cancellation
We will pay you up to £2,000 for your proportion only of any irrecoverable unused travel and
accommodation costs (including excursions up to £250) and other pre-paid charges which you have
paid or are contracted to pay, together with your proportion only of any reasonable additional travel
expenses incurred if cancellation of the trip or one-way trip is necessary and unavoidable as a result of
    any of the following events:

    1. The death, bodily injury, illness, disease, or complications of pregnancy of:
      a. You.
      b. Any person who you are travelling or have arranged to travel with.
      c. Any person who you have arranged to stay with.
      d. Your close relative.
      e. Your close business associate.

When did you buy the policy?

Was none of that text in bold or Title Case? Would assume at least some of it was in which case those words will have special meaning which will be defined in the definition page. Certainly "close relative" will be a defined term.

You also need to look at the exclusions, for example StaySure says similar (but not identical) but the exclusions calls out anything related to pre-existing conditions and the definition of "illness" states it must be confirmed by a doctors diagnosis.

I think the wording about necessary and unavoidable will also come into play.

It’s the difference between her being at home with support with a stomach bug which may well be over in a day or two, and being seriously ill in hospital just to give two examples at each end of the spectrum.
The first would not be necessary and unavoidable cancellation.
