Nationwide declined £175 switch payment

In addition to the above, you say that you "set up direct debits".
The switch incentive, as far as I can see, requires that the account that you're switching already has 2 direct debits set up prior to the switch.
Could you clarify?

Thanks for all your replies, I paid the garage for my service and couldn't make any payments without the debit card as Nationwide required I needed to use their card reader. As said I should have bought a 50p pack of sweets and that would have been fine. I only switched to take advantage of their over 75 packaged account travel insurance having been with the same bank for the past 50 years. I still think the wording of conditions is confusing as it says use card once and how many people know what constitutes a money transfer. I am now left with a bad taste as I acted in good faith and feel Nationwide are being petty.

I was going to question this as well. The DDs needed to be moved to Nationwide from the old account as a part of the switch, not "set up" on the new account.
And I agree with the other posts about the debit card - IMO it's very clear that you need to use your debit card to pay for something to qualify. Using your card reader to authorise a bank transfer definitely won't count.

The garage gave me their sort code and account number with I used to pay in the Nationwide app.

Sorry, there were eight direct debits transferred from my old account and I added another two.

Right well thats not a debit card payment then
The fact you had to use your card to put in their ancient card reader (which no other bank really uses anymore btw) to do the online transfer does not make it a debit card payment. What you did was a bank transfer.
Also i would be very dubious about anyone who asks you to pay in that way, its clearly an attempt to dodge a potential chargeback by not doing it as a proper card payment.

Thanks again to everyone who responded.

They have now said I don't qualify as the debit card was used on line using the card reader they insisted I use
Switched to Nationwide Nov 25 & do not have any card reader. Make regular online (banking) payments via app.

They give you the choice - use the card reader or use 2 factor authentication via texts etc. They probably offer the app option as well, but I don’t have the app so I don’t know.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
At any rate, while you haven't met the criteria this time there's nothing stopping you from doing another switch. The offer is available to new and existing account holders, so no need to open a second Nationwide account.
