I Used ChatGPT to Predict the Inflation Rate

But probably all out of date now…………

Interesting thread tbh. The biggest issue is people treating ChatGPT output like an actual economic model when it's really just pattern recognition with confident wording.
A proper inflation forecast usually includes:
- interest rate expectations
- unemployment data
- wage growth
- energy prices
- fiscal policy
- consumer demand
- geopolitical risk
- central bank intervention
ChatGPT can summarize trends, explain scenarios, or even generate a “possible path” for inflation, but it doesn’t actually understand economics or run policy-sensitive macro models the way central banks attempt to.
What I found funny was that the AI graph looked believable at first glance — which is exactly why people overtrust AI outputs. One commenter nailed it by pointing out the difference between a “projection” and a “forecast.” A projection extends trends. A forecast assumes interventions and policy responses. That distinction matters a lot. (MoneySavingExpert Forum)
Personally, I think AI is more useful for:
- explaining inflation
- stress-testing scenarios
- summarizing economic reports
- identifying historical patterns
…than actually predicting future CPI accurately.
If the last few years taught us anything, it’s that inflation can change overnight because of events no language model can truly anticipate properly wars, supply shocks, political decisions, pandemics, energy spikes, etc.
So yeah, ChatGPT can produce an interesting chart. But trusting it over economists, markets, and central banks combined is probably giving it way too much credit.

The inflation figures out on May 20th will be interesting as it will include the high increases in fuel (and secondary effects) compared with last year as a result of the Iran war.
RPI over 5% and CPI over 4% seems likely?
