Can a life insurance cancel my policy just because they want to?

It's now been over 3 weeks since I have requested a refund, and total silence.

If it is being treated as a complaint, then you should have had an acknowledgement within days. If it's gone into the general call centre servicing pool and not the complaints team, then it would be subject to their workflow. Insurers typically slow down around tax year changeover as they divert resources to end of tax year work

I've now got a reply, they are stating they would have paid the lump sum even though the policy states that I was not covered from my 70th birthday, or when I left employment.
I'm pretty sure they would have just refunded the payments made and not the sum insured as that's what they usually do.

how are you aware of "what they usually do"?
Actually, what they are saying is probably accurate and they almost certainly would have paid out on the plan if you were getting charged for the cover.
