I think what Yorkie1 was emphasising was that you should speak to an "independent" financial advisor. A financial advisor who is not independent is usually tied to products from one provider and not whole of market.

Have a look at Vanguard. They offer ISAs and SIPPs and a range of funds that are relatively inexpensive and simple to understand and DIY. There are other options, but Vanguard has a clear website that will explain your basic options and the most important thing is not to be paralyzed by the vast number of choices you have as many of them end up being very similar.
