Booking dot com cancellation on their end the night before

Hi all, just a query regarding booked and paid for accommodation.

We booked and paid for an apartment in Manchester for Saturday night through a booking website, so this is literally tomorrow, and we booked this months ago, and at 7pm tonight this was cancelled due to something about a technical issue and we shouldn’t have been able to book that place for that date in the first place, which is plausible, mistakes happen.

However, since my partner has shared this dismay on social media, four other people who are our friends, and who are attending the same event in Manchester as us tomorrow have had theirs cancelled as well with similar reasons given.

I may be totally wrong but this stinks of profiteering to me, resell these highly in demand places for a much higher price this close to the event, by my logic it’s too much of a long shot to be a genuine coincidence.

Pure speculation here and no idea if this could be proven either way, but say my theory is correct, is that even legal?

I would say you are correct they are probably going to resell for more but it's not Illegal and nothing you can do about it

You had a contract and they have failed to hold up their end of the contract especially if they have cancelled for a reason other than the stated one (a technical issue).

Have a look on Airbnb and see if you can get anything. Perhaps you could stay further out and drive or get a taxi back if you’ll be drinking.

Was this booked before The Brits event location was announced?

If so what has happened is a common practice. booking.com will state they are only an agent acting for a property owner the owner can cancel bookings.
