I too have a Coop account and it took 10 minutes by phone to open. Received card, pin etc within one week. I just paid cash in on Friday and it was available immediately. I've also paid in cheques without any problem.

I have a prepaid Cashplus MC and it costs £4.95 per month only no matter how many transactions you make. I think the website is www.mycashplus.co.uk. Once you open the account you have to 'upgrade' it but that was easy.
