It's worth pointing out that even if you go for the 'Open' policy, someone will need to check licenses and accident records for all drivers. The difference is that you won't have to submit details to the insurer - you'll still need to have those details.

Thanks Sue, you are correct. It's important to check the proposed driver meets the criteria to be able to drive.

If they met criteria, there is no need to submit details to insurer.

If they do not meet criteria, for example because they had an accident or points on their license etc, then it's possible to contact Motability/insurance for them to confirm if they will cover that person to drive.

I wasn't sure if Motability insurer would consider drivers with a less than perfect record. My experience is from the 'work' van, which allowed up to three points on a licence before we had to check in with them.

We asked drivers to complete a form before they drove, checked their licence and assessed their driving. We asked them to tell us immediately if anything changed, but - people being people - we also required them to complete the same form each year, in case they'd forgotten to tell us about any misdemeanours …

And I have already indicated up-thread that if there are multiple drivers it's ESSENTIAL to keep a log of who was driving when, and common sense to include a note of where they were going, and why.

I agree with Sue in terms of keeping details records.

It sounds like your SIL may not be able to keep their own record. You could check with supportive living about how they keep records regarding driving. They will probably request to see the insurance certificate.

I'd recommend contacting Motability insurance if a potential driver has motoring convictions or at-fault accident. In my experience, the insurers will consider each request on a case-by-case basis. I've had permission for a carer with 3 points and 6 point to drive my vehicle. The insurers did require the carer with 6 points to provide further details of circumstances and date points incurred.

There is also the issue of under 30 drivers now & black boxes being required, on new leases.
