Do I Still Need to Complete a DVLA V62 Form After Receiving My V5C Registration Certificate?

I recently purchased a car privately and went through the process of registering it with the DVLA. I completed the insurance, and when I realized the vehicle was registered as SORN by the previous owner, I went to my local post office. They provided me with a V62 form — the “Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate” — which I filled in and submitted along with the tax payment. The following day, I checked online, and my car appeared as taxed. A few days later, I also received the official V5C registration certificate in the post.

Now, however, I’ve received the V62 form back with a letter asking me to fill in the VIN, chassis, or frame number and return it in a pre-paid envelope. I didn’t include these details initially because I only had the new keeper slip at the time, and I wasn’t sure of the vehicle’s full details.

My question is: since I have already received my V5C and my car is correctly taxed and registered online, is it necessary to complete and return this V62 form? Will failing to submit it cause any issues with DVLA records or my legal registration status? I understand the DVLA may need to verify certain details, but I’m unclear whether this is a mandatory step or just a precaution.

If you've got a V5C in your name, then that's all. No need for a V62, which is the form to apply for a replacement V5C.

Being given the new keeper slip is the norm. You could have taxed it with that slip online.
The old keeper then sends the full old V5C back or does it online - which is obvs what they did this time. It's their legal responsibility.

Also, if you have the car in front of you, then you have the VIN… On most vaguely modern cars, it's visible in the corner of the windscreen. It's also on the VIN plate and stamped into a wing edge under the bonnet, and quite often on stickers in places like door shuts.

Simple question - does the V5 you've now received, have the correct chassis number of the car on it?

Was the new keeper slip from the V5C that had the previous owner's details on or was it one where the previous owner hadn't registered the car so it was still in another person's name? I've seen many examples online where people sell cars with only the new keeper slip having not got a V5C.
