Scart to hdmi
Hi,
My MIL has just got a new tv.
She has an older dvd player that uses a scart socket.
The new tv has HDMI ports free.
I have so far tried two cables with scart one end and hdmi the other and with both the tv hasn't picking up the signal.
What is the best way to connect the two and does anyone have links to cables that would work?

You need a converter to change the analogue scart signal into a digital one for HDMI. It's not something a passive cable can do.
Edit:
If you tell us the model of the TV, someone might be able to suggest the best way to connect.... Or just buy a new DVD player as that might be cheaper!

Might it be better to buy a new DVD player with HDMI connection, and excellent quality rather than a but of a 'bodge job' with converters etc?

You need an HDMI input then. There are SCART to HDMI cables with built-in converters, but they need power (typically from USB). Do the cables you already have tried not required separate power?
New DVD players are not expensive! 🙂

This is what you need, you need to supply the cables and also a USB adaptor for power (eg phone charger).

Rather than spend £13 I'd definitely say buy a new DVD player (£29 for the following), they'll get better video quality and perhaps audio. It even includes an HDMI cable.

There are a lot of people selling Frankenstein cables that will never work.
SCART makes like even more complex because it was intended to be the port that ends all ports because it could carry various different signals but then the world went digital and SCARTs time came to an end.
You need a signal converter, you can get cables with one built in or you can buy it as a standalone box. The problem is the aforementioned fact that SCART can carry different signals and the cheapest such boxes tend to only work with the lowest quality signal (576i over composite). You can get better ones but then you would need to know what the output capabilities of the DVD player are.
I'd echo others opinions, ditch the DVD player and just buy a new one as they are cheap as chips.

Buy a new DVD player with a HDMI output. They are cheap. It will be a lot easier than buying a SCART to HDMI converter and installing it will give better quality results.

Quite!
If the budget is tight you can usually pick up an HDMI DVD (or even BluRay) player for a tenner at a charity shop or on Gumtree.

Or dig out an old Playstation or Xbox from the loft storage.
