@Brie it’s just the meter itself, not the IHD that makes a difference to the tariff - indeed, certainly for us on Agile, the IHD doesn’t tell us anything about cost as the figures would be all wrong! That said, we’ve never used ours for cost anyway, always had it set to show consumption. I find it useful to have for several reasons - the orange “higher than usual use” light can alert to something being on that shouldn’t be. Second, it’s really handy for reading the gas meter without having to go outside and open the box (because “here be spiders” and I’m happy to avoid that most months!) - just leaving me needing to go out there once every 3/4 months to check that the meter is still displaying and all is well. That latter use is something that the Octopus Mini doesn’t help with too of course! So - do you actually “need” it = no. Might it have uses for you = yes.

I’ d also just remembered the thing it was most useful for - tracking down the old style GU10 50w bulbs when we moved in! 🤣

The installation engineer give me the IHD, and say leave it on and it should work, but Octopus have the home mini that works directly for their app. However, they did not commission it. 1st week or so during the installation I did check and IHD is not working, then I received the home mini and did not think much and turn the IHD off because it was not displaying the usage. Silly me, I know. It was more than 18 months ago my smart meter was installed.

YES, my previous supplier was OCTOPUS! get the home mini that works with their app, I was told. Apps works and IHD did not, I did not think it is a problem as I can see my usage on the app. I have changed supplier now, and I got nothing. Would I have chase after Octopus if I cannot view my usage and etc, absolutely!

New supplier confirmed that it was not commission, therefore it is clear that whoever installed the smart meter is at fault as they failed to commission it.

This was from OCTOPUS email. Why would I think twice about IHD, when I can view without problem in their app?

If they left the IHD with you, just ask your new supplier to commission it. Any competent supplier should be able to do that.

They have tried to help me and say the following.

    "
Because these assets were not installed by them and are not fully commissioned, a remote reset will not resolve the issue. Unfortunately, this means we cannot activate or fix the smart functionality remotely.

If your current IHD is out of warranty and still not working, one option is to purchase a replacement called the ivie Bud. This is a third-party device compatible with many smart meters, including those from us. It is easy to set up and helps you monitor your energy usage conveniently.

Exactly, they just need the GUID of the IHD and they'll pair it the exact same way they do it when a new smart meter gets installed.

Ha!! Well as it doesn't work for the gas meter at all that's not an excuse and besides spiders are our friends!! OH gets upset when I find an interesting one in the garden and proceed to play with it. Somehow that makes me weird!!!

They said they are not able to commission it and I needed to buy a new one.

If it was issued along with your smart meter, then they are able to commission it, they just can't be bothered. I'd ask for a deadlock letter and take it to the energy ombudsman.
