The funds you own are separate from a platform's internal finances so if they were to go bankrupt your funds would be ring fenced and if you avoid speculative funds (I'm thinking of Woodford) you won't get into a mis-selling scenario. I'm in the US and chose Vanguard because it has a mutual ownership model where the clients own the funds and the funds own Vanguard. I also stick largely to Vanguard index trackers to keep fees low and to avoid "Woodford issues" and to a lesser extent Fundsmith type highs and lows.

And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Thanks all for some great information.

I have a follow up question. I'm moving a couple of pensions and maybe an ISA or two to and InvestEngine SIPP. Since InvestEngine do not accept direct transfers from my providers I'm using a Vanguard SIPP as a staging account. I'm transferring to PPs to that as cash and understand the whole process could take 2 to 3 months. Has anyone expereinced this and beleive it's accurate?

Given that this is a realaitively long time, particularly given how much growth I'm seeing in the existing funds are they likely to be active for the 10-12 week period until fully cashed out and transferred to Vanguard or do they potentially loose weeks of growth? Equally, is it best to hold these in cash in Vanguard before building my ctual portfolio in IE to reduce friction and multiple conversions/fees? Currently I'm talking about a £200k fund there. Once set up in IE in a few months that may double, but by then I hope to be fully invested.

Seems a bit odd, any idea why ?

Presume you mean two personal pensions? Normally a cash transfer would take two to three weeks at most, can be less than a week. They would only be cashed out prior to the actual transfer, so you should only be out of the market for maybe a couple of days- a week at most .

    OK, thanks, makes sense.

Yes, Invest Engine only accept transfers from Vanguard and HL for the time being. My personal pensions are all held elsewhere, so I've had to open a Vanguard SIPP as a staging account prior to transfer into IE. Vanguard say to allow 10 weeks for trandfer, but it can take longer.

Interesting! Yes, I can see the list is bigger now, however when I tried to transfer a week or so ago they wouldn't accept transfers from anyone but Vanguard and Hargreaves Lansdown and told me they'd notify me if that changes. Sadly one of my pemsions is still not on the list so I still need to go through Vanguard for that.
