HMRC payment end Feb deadline for estimated letter.
Hi asking for a friend's dad....
The father never had to do q self assessment before and was paying on the estimated tax owed letter HMRC had sent each year. However, investment income means he started a self assessment for 24/25. Unbeknownst to him, HMRC haven't sent a UTR code although it was requested months ago. Rang and the UTR is "on its way"
He's worried that he'll be later than the estimated letter end of Feb deadline now, as he was going to pay the new amount on a UTR code but it still hasn't turned up
what should he do? HMRC didn't have him down as owing a tax return for the end of January 26 so should he pay the original letter and then make up the difference when the UTR turns up?
thank you MSE universe...

Might it have "Simple Assessment (for a tax year)" at the head of the letter? If so then he should probably pay the amount owed by the date specified. If he thinks the amount is wrong then he should call HMRC asap to correct their mistakes. He should not wait for a UTR. The letter will have a charge reference on it which I assume he may need to make sure the payment gets to the right place.
