credit limits

I currently have 3 credit cards, egg money, halifax and nat-west owing about £6000. I want to balance transfer onto a new card at 0% over 15 months so i can just make one payment a month to pay it off. I applied for a barclaycard and was accepted but the credit limit is only £1000. I have rung a few others up like egg and virgin but they can't tell me the credit limit without me applying, but applying can reduce my credit limit! Is there any way of finding out what credit limit i would receive without applying?

No, but by reducing the credit limits on your existing cards you can improve your chances of a better credit limit than you would otherwise have secured.

A word of warning though...just as important as your total available credit, is your used credit ratio. Reducing your limits (too much) to match your borrowings would be a bad move, since your credit report will show that you are maxed out and probably applying through sheer desperation. Better then, to lower them part way between your existing limit and what you currently owe.

Thanks, i will try that. If i checked my credit files through Experian for example would i be able to find out what credit limit is available to me?
