State Pension and tax code 2026/27

Yes I know that and you know that but the people involved don’t necessarily see it that way. HMRC should accept the taxpayer’s own figures of requested but they’re refusing to do so and it cannot be changed in the App or via the Gateway.

I’ve found that with the pre-populated figure in my Self Assessment but my tax code always use the correct 51/1 configuration. So in my experience the DWP gives only the weekly figure and it’s HMRC that then use it to turn it into a yearly figure.

Totally agree about 2nd March if that is the State Pension start date.
Although the more I think about it I'm not sure how HMRC know about State Pension that is yet to start. Will have to have a closer look at HMRC's guidance manual.
I think it's less clear cut if it was a start date of 31st March as the entitlement for that year would seemingly be £0 in HMRC eyes.

Yes but we’re not talking about 2025/26 tax codes. We’re talking about 2026/27 tax codes where there will be a full year’s entitlement.
Presumably the DWP has informed HMRC about the amount of state pension for everyone in 2026/27 so that tax codes can be sorted. The anomaly seems to be about those whose SPA date is March 2026.0 -
Well as I understood it DWP didn't tell HMRC about the State Pension until shortly after it started.
Maybe worth waiting to see what happens with your 2nd March person, maybe there will be a change shortly after that date is passed?
You can now see the State Pension information HMRC hold on the new style Personal Tax Account that someone on the Cutting Tax board has mentioned. Maybe this person should check that in 2-3 weeks?

Yes that would normally be the case but appears to be different for those who reach SPA at the end of one tax year. Seemed to be ok for March birthdays in 2025 though.
As HMRC refuses to change his tax code and now spoken to them twice, that seems to be all that’s left. The first agent told him it was because he was contracted out which is nonsense as he’s getting the full pension anyway. The 2nd person just kept saying the amounts were correct.

Unfortunately speaking to HMRC is now the same as speaking to any front line CS, luck of the draw if you get someone who knows what they are talking about rather than "computer says".

Just ignore them, the people on here probably understand more than a lot of HMRC staff do these days!

Now got another 3 people reporting the same issue. One more March SPA but the other 2 are February.
Something has gone wrong with HMRC.0 -
Having delved a bit deeper I suspect it might be a timing issue.
Although not 100% conclusive this seems to suggest HMRC will be notified when the State Pension commences i.e. February or March in your examples.
But maybe if these people had already contacted DWP to apply for their State Pension DWP have included them in the annual updating data they provide HMRC with?
Has the February person said what date in February their State Pension started (not the date the first payment was received)?
